This is an ambitious project that will develop in multiple phases over a number of years. We have outlined an initial high-level plan below. We expect the plan to evolve as we learn more and what works and what is practical and sustainable.
Lay the foundations
Early tasks include:
- create a steering group.
- write a vision and a high level plan
- reach out to key stakeholders
Engage the community
We will work with the local community to gather feedback, build support and refine the project. This includes:
- developing a website with the vision, plan, and an invitation to get involved
- creating an online form and community questionnaire to gauge interest and gather ideas and suggestions
- holding an open meeting to meet people and discuss our plans
Assess feasibility
We will work with experts to assess the viability of the project and create detailed plans. This work includes:
- developing a business plan for the café, restaurant, shop and other commercial activities
- conducting feasibility studies for hydro and solar power generation
- assessing building condition, flood resilience and any necessary improvements
Fundraise for purchase and reopening
We will fundraise for the initial purchase and reopening through a variety of sources, including:
- a community share offer
- loans from social and community-focused lenders
- grants from aligned funding bodies
- local fundraising events
This includes funding required for essential works to make the Mill safe and secure, and for utilities, insurance and other initial running costs.
Reopen the Mill
We will reopen the Mill with a focus on those parts of the plan that are most achievable and capable of generating income early on. The exact approach will depend on the outcome of the business planning and feasibility work, but is likely to focus on the following:
- café and restaurant
- village shop
- workshops and co-working space
Develop renewable energy projects
Subject to the outcome of feasibility studies, we will develop renewable energy projects at the Mill.
This phase may be funded through a combination of community investment, social lenders and grant funding focused on renewable energy, sustainability and flood resilience.
Expand and improve the site
As the project develops and we learn more about what works well, we hope to gradually expand the range of facilities, activities and environmental projects at the Mill. Possible future projects may include:
- improvements to workshops and event spaces
- more community growing spaces and gardens
- river habitat restoration and flood defence projects
- electric vehicle charging infrastructure
- a community sauna and wellbeing space
Support the project
Fill in this form to help us show community support for the project.
We’ll send you a short questionnaire so you can let us know what you would like to see at Bickleigh Mill. We will also sign you up for regular updates about the project.
Alternatively, you can download a printable version of the questionnaire. This will allows you to complete the questionnaire without supporting the project, and also anonymously, if you wish.
